Tour Highlights Include:
DAY 1 Make an express trip over I-90 to Vantage, where we will stop at the Petrified Forest for a picnic lunch and ranger talk. Continue to Soap Lake and the Dry Falls Interpretive Center. The historic 1928 Vista House and Rock Gazebo Overlook offer panoramic views of Dry Falls. What were once plunge pools of the Ice Age waterfall are now groundwater-fed lakes, home to various wildlife. In the Visitor Center, enjoy a comprehensive bookstore and indoor exhibits of the geologic history of the Ice Age Floods in the Pacific Northwest. Arrive in Wenatchee for an overnight stay. Our hotel is just a couple of blocks from the famous Pybus Market—an airy marketplace featuring local farm goods, artisanal foods, restaurants, and specialty shops. The perfect place to grab dinner and taste some local wines. (L)
DAY 2 Depart after an early breakfast to board one of the Chelan boat company’s new express boats for a 55-mile lake journey to the remote village of Stehekin. Not accessible by road, people living here rely on boats for delivery of supplies and mail. In the upper basin, this pristine body of water plunges to depths of 1,500 feet. Along the way, the captain provides light narration on the folklore and points of interest. In Stehekin, our partners will pick you up in their bus to take you on a guided tour. They are locals who grew up here. You'll stop at the one-room schoolhouse, now a registered historical landmark. Arrive at the 312-foot Rainbow Falls—at its fullest this time of year and sounding like liquid thunder! Visit the Old Orchard and explore historic buildings. We’ll stop at the famous Stehekin Pastry Company for a no-host lunch and time at their gift shop. Once back in Chelan, continue to the rustic Virginian Resort in the Methow Valley for an overnight stay. All rooms are riverfront. It’s a ½-mile walk into the Western village of Winthrop for dinner and shopping. The resort also has a saloon and horseshoes.
DAY 3 Good morning! Our staff will be cooking a camp-style breakfast on the BBQ. Sip hot coffee and enjoy the riverside views with your Exploration friends. After breakfast, stop in town for a guided tour of the Shaffer Museum, explore the shops, and have lunch on your own before heading out on one of our state’s most scenic byways—Highway 20, North Cascades. Our journey includes several overlooks, including the turquoise blue Diablo Lake and the North Cascades Visitor Center. Take a short accessible boardwalk to the Sterling Munro Viewpoint for views of the Picket Range and Terror Glacier—one of more than 300 glaciers in the North Cascades. The views from the Washington Pass Overlook are expansive. Look for Liberty Bell Mountain and the Early Winters Spires, with massive peaks jutting above the creek and highway.
Due to our unique lodging, this tour is limited and you need to book early.
