DAY 1 Overnight Rail to West Glacier

Afternoon departure to join your fellow Explorers for a late lunch before settling into your seats on Amtrak's Empire Builder for a fabulous sunset train ride over the Cascades, following the route of Hwy 2. Along the way, travel through forests, past rushing rivers, cascading waterfalls, and charming mountain villages. As you pass Bavarian Leavenworth, the sun will be setting, and you can settle into your large reclining coach seats or upgrade for $398 to a roomette. These first-class private rooms can accommodate up to two people, convert to upper/lower sleeping berths in the evening, and include meals in the dining room. L

DAY 2 Glacier National Park Historic Red Jammer Tour

Start your morning on our private ride through the great cedar and hemlock forests within the Lake McDonald Valley. Traverse the famed Going-to-the-Sun Road to the high alpine region of the park and stand on top of the Continental Divide. Discover incredible mountain ranges, glaciers, waterfalls, and wildflowers along the way as your Red Bus glides along the glacially carved Garden Wall. These famous Red Buses serve as an ideal way to see and learn more about Glacier National Park. In fact, the vintage 1930s buses are part of the park’s heritage. Since much of the park’s scenery is vertically oriented, the roll-back tops are perfect for full views of the stunning mountains and Big Sky. The guides are seasoned park veterans who enjoy sharing the park with you. We travel east to west before continuing to Shelby for a one-night stay. B, L

DAY 3 Lewis and Clark History and the Art of C.M. Russell

This Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center imparts President Thomas Jefferson's vision of expanding America to the west; it inspires awe and curiosity toward the challenges faced by the expedition as they portaged the Great Falls of the Missouri River and explored the uncharted West. At Giant Springs State Park, visit the beautiful springs (first described by Lewis and Clark in 1805). After a lunch and shopping break, join a guided docent tour of the CM Russell Museum of Western Art. Overnight stay. B

DAY 4 Gates of the Mountains Cruise and Spokane Bar Sapphire Mine

Continue following the path of Lewis and Clark by exploring the “Gates of the Mountains.” This two-hour boat cruise starts in the foothills of the Rockies. You’ll cruise aboard a comfortable open-air boat (covered in case of rain), gliding on the Missouri River through magnificent country Meriwether Lewis would still recognize today. After lunch, mine for sapphires in many colors. Most commonly found are green-blue sapphires; blue and ruby are the most prized. Sapphires from ½ carat up to 10 carats are fairly common here. B

DAY 5 Last Chance Tour Train and Return Flight to SeaTac

Take the Last Chance Tour of Helena aboard an open-air tour train. See the opulent mansion district, marvel at the Cathedral of St. Helena, and roll by the governor’s homes. See a restored miners’ village, enjoy the unique architecture along Last Chance Gulch, and catch a glimpse of the Old Fire Tower before our return flight. B, L
